at a beautiful ranch

October 31 - November 4

The Workshop

Full-time astrophotographers Nico Carver and Sarah Mathews have designed the world's first, in-person workshop devoted exclusively to photographing nebulae. For this special event, we have chosen the absolute best time of year for capturing our favorites including the North America Nebula, the Crescent Nebula, the Pleiades, the Rosette Nebula, the Orion Nebula, and the Horsehead Nebula! With the favorable weather patterns for southern Arizona, we fully expect you will leave this workshop with several nebula photos that you can be proud to display.

Crescent Nebula

Our main focus will be education and giving you the tools and expertise needed to master the art of nebula photography and be able to continue with it at home. We will be sharing powerful techniques that will cut through light pollution to reveal stunning nebular detail whether you live in a city or the country. By working together as a small group with us as your guides, you will learn more in four days than you would in months working alone.

The Pleiades

We have crafted an all-inclusive workshop meaning your accommodations and all meals are included in the price. We will be staying, eating and conducting all elements of the workshop together at a beautiful ranch an hour outside of Tucson, Arizona. A huge advantage of staying at the same location where we will be shooting from is if you ever get tired, you can simply go sleep in a comfy bed in your private room. With the kits we recommend it will be possible to continue capturing photos while we sleep.

Arizona

To be considered for the first cohort, please fill out our short application form. Please read through all the information about the workshop listed on this page first. We will consider applications on a rolling basis as they come in until the workshop is filled. If there are any cancellations, we will use a wait-list to bring the number of participants back up to 10. Those on the wait-list will also get priority in signing up for future workshops.

Who is this for?

Maybe you’ve already captured the Milky Way with a DSLR and lens, but always wanted to try deep sky objects with a telescope. Or maybe you’ve only watched some videos on the topic, but didn’t know the best way to start. Our workshop will be valuable whether you are brand new to astrophotography, have dabbled in it a few times, or have been doing it for a couple years. You should be willing to invest in a dedicated astrophotography kit that we will show you how to use with in-depth, tailored instruction.

The Kits

To give you an idea of what equipment to bring, we have devised two kits that are perfect for this workshop. If you are willing to purchase one of the kits OR already own similar gear, we encourage you to apply! The only strict requirement is that you bring an ASIAir (any model) and gear compatible with the ASIAir. Please also keep in mind that if travelling to the workshop by airplane, you will need to pack all your gear and take it with you in carry-on and checked luggage. You do not need to bring a battery, just AC adapters as we will have power available at the ranch. If you are looking to purchase gear prior to the workshop, we are happy to consult with you by email, phone or Zoom. There is also the possibilty for two participants to borrow our kits for the workshop - these are first come, first served.

Itinerary

September, dates TBA

Leading up to the in-person workshop, we will be holding two remote sessions over Zoom. These sessions will cover what to expect, how to pack the gear, installing processing software, testing the ASIAir, and will allow us to answer any questions. These sessions will be recorded for anyone that can’t make it to either session.

Thursday, October 31st

Plan to arrive at the ranch between 2 and 5pm MST. It is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes North from the Tucson airport (TUS). Directions will be provided.

After a delicious dinner together, we will be focusing on how to set up our kits for a successful night of photographing nebulae. From polar alignment to autoguiding to filter choices, Sarah and Nico will be there every step of the way to guide you through the process and master all the technical steps. We all will be coming to this at different levels, so the instruction will be tailored to whatever speed you are comfortable with. By having two instructors, we will be able to give each participant lots of individual attention.

Each night of the workshop we will challenge you to capture certain nebulae. Everyone wlll capture the challenge level 1 object each night, but the rest is up to you! The challenge nebulae on October 31st will be Halloween-themed: The Witch’s Broom Nebula (challenge level 1), The Skull Nebula (challenge level 3), and the Witch Head Nebula (challenge level 5).

Friday, November 1st

The first full day of the workshop will open with a nutritious included breakfast before some free time to explore the surrounding area. The ranch is located adjacent to a state park with lots of hiking for those interested. After lunch, we will explain how to transfer images from the ASIAir to your laptop, and begin pre-processing with the free and easy-to-use program Siril. Every step will be fully explained and we will break the group up as needed so that no one ever falls behind.

After dinner, we will continue exploring all the ins and outs of the ASIAir which is the app we will be using to control our telescope systems.

The challenge nebulae on November 1st are: The North America Nebula (challenge level 1), The Pleiades (challenge level 2) and The Horsehead Nebula (challenge level 3).

Saturday, November 2nd

On the second full day, after breakfast, Sarah will give a presentation on nebulae types and examples of the nebulae you can capture at different times of year including the Lagoon & Trifid Nebulae, and the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex. Sarah will give you lots to look forward to in this presentation.

Between the included lunch and dinner, we will delve back into processing our photos. Day two is when it will start getting really exciting as we should be starting to produce finished photos with beautiful color, contrast, and composition.

At night, we will continue capturing nebulae with our kits, and refining our processes together.

The challenge nebulae on November 2nd are: The Orion Nebula (challenge level 1), The Crescent Nebula (challenge level 3), and The Heart Nebula (challenge level 4).

Sunday, November 3rd

As usual, breakfast will be provided. In the morning, Nico will present on his favorite topic: planning and creative compositions. Nico loves nebulae more than any other deep sky object because they lend themselves to creative framings. But how do you compose a photo when the object is invisible to the naked eye? You will find out in this hands-on presentation.

In the afternoon, we will break into informal small group processing sessions. Every workshop participant will get the opportunity for one-on-one with either Nico or Sarah. This is your chance to ask any questions you’d like. We are also open to discussing software outside of Siril and Photoshop, like PixInsight. It’s up to you!

Before dinner on the final full day, we will be celebrating what we’ve accomplished with a showcase of your finished images. Each participant will have the chance to show one or two of the images they created during the course of the workshop on the big screen. We will also discuss our wish lists of imaging targets for the final night.

On the final night of the workshop, we will be available all night for one-on-one help, and will encourage you to also learn from each other as we find teaching others is the best way to master the craft. You can capture any nebula on your personal wish list or continue capturing data on objects you've already started to make them even better.

Monday, November 4th

We will have grab-and-go breakfast burritos available starting early. You can have breakfast anytime before 10am in order to make your travel connections home. Nico and Sarah will be available all morning for final questions. Final check-out time is 10am.

Note: Other than arrival/departure times, itinerary is subject to change based on weather and how we are progressing through the planned material together. We plan to be responsive and adaptable to make this a great experience for all.
